Carlton Welch Crump

 

On Thursday, March 16, 2017, Carlton Welch Crump slipped away peacefully at his residence and went home to be with the Lord. Carlton was born on September 22, 1951, in Spotsylvania, VA. to the late Mildred “Kitty” Crump Lewis. Carlton joined Sylvannah Baptist Church at an early age. He attended Sunday school and participated in youth activities. He was a 1969 graduate of Spotsylvania High School, where he excelled in basketball and track. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University on an athletic scholarship and received a bachelor’s degree.


Carlton was a faithful employee of the Virginia Employment Commission for almost 25 years.

He was a true big brother to his sisters and was his nephew’s best friend.  He was the family morning weatherman. He enjoyed attending his nephew’s sporting events and coaching him in soccer, basketball, football, and track.  He encouraged his nephew to excel in the classroom and sports.

He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and was a huge fan of the UNC men’s basketball team.  He enjoyed debating and could provide accurate stats of any given team. He relished spending time with family and friends and talking about old times. He excelled in basketball, track and softball. Carlton was passionate in mentoring and took great pride in coaching young people. He had a kind and gentle spirit and always made time for others.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred “Kitty” Crump Lewis and his grandparents, Bennie Lee Crump Sr. and Hester Fairchild Crump.

Carlton leaves to cherish his memory:  two sisters, Faye Darnell Thompson of Spotsylvania, VA, and Marti Marie Lewis of Gainesville, VA; his nephew, Fred “Trey” Thompson III of Spotsylvania, VA; two uncles, Bennie Crump, Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA, and Robert Crump of Washington, D.C.; four aunts, Alma Taylor (William) of Spotsylvania, VA, Audrey Brickhouse of Exmore, VA, Constance Taylor (Arthur) of Hartsdale, NY, and Catherine Harris of Fort Washington, MD; one great uncle, Layton Fairchild of Spotsylvania, VA; three great-aunts, Berlee Williams of Spotsylvania, VA, Alice Miller of Spotsylvania, VA, and Evelyn Fairchild of Fredericksburg; a special friend, Roberta Harper; numerous cousins, and many other relatives and friends.

The viewing will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Sylvannah Baptist Church, 8400 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania, VA, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by funeral services at 1:00 p.m.  Interment will be at Sylvannah Baptist Church cemetery.
